What to Know About Golf Downswing Steps?

One of the most important elements of the golf swing is in the transition from the backswing to the downswing. It is important for golfers to have the right tempo in the transition in order to get sufficient power and to start the downswing on the proper path. Having a transition that is too quick will result in the downswing being offline and cause shots to go off target with little power.
Slow Down the Backswing
For most amateurs, the downswing transition is difficult because they get too quick in their backswing. Taking the club back quickly causes the entire swing to be out of tempo and often causes a lack of power and a poor transition into the downswing. Instead of being quick on the backswing, focus on making a full backswing with the same tempo all the way to the top.
Work From the Ground Up
An important aspect of a good transition is the movement of the lower body as the swing transitions from the backswing to the downswing. Golf professional Jack Nicklaus stated in "Golf Digest" that the swing should begin from the ground up, with the lower body leading the downswing. During the transition, the feet and lower body shift the weight from the back of your body to the front of your body, which helps control the downswing and provide the power needed to hit the shot. At the top of the swing, focus on moving your weight onto your front foot as you begin the downswing.
Focus on the Left Knee
A key to the lower body movement is the left knee (for right-handers), which moves toward the target and straightens out during your downswing. During the backswing, your body weight should load up on your right leg and provide a solid base when the club goes back. As you begin the transition into the downswing, focus on shifting your weight to your front leg and straightening the leg as you move the club through impact.
Pause at the Top
If you are having difficulty with your downswing transition being too quick, focus on pausing at the top of your backswing. As you reach the top of your backswing, pause for a second before beginning the downswing. This will help you stay in control and allow you to swing as hard as you want on the downswing without being out of control. Once you get a feel for this move, your tempo will be much better and allow for a smoother transition.
