Things to Know About Sports Acne

Sports-related acne, also called acne mechanica, tends to occur in areas covered by sports equipment. It is most common in people who suffer from sandpaper acne or non-facial acne and among soldiers stationed in the tropics. Methods for treating sports-related acne are similar to those used in treating other types of acne, including the use of antibiotics.

Cause

The hair follicles covered by sports uniforms and equipment can get clogged with dead skin cells and oil due to the combination of heat, pressure and constant rubbing that occurs while playing sports, causing acne mechanica. The rapid reproduction of a bacteria called P. acnes can also cause outbreaks of acne.

Antibiotics for Acne Treatment

Because acne can be caused by bacteria, antibiotics are often used to treat acne. For milder cases, topical antibiotics might be sufficient, but moderate to severe cases of acne can require oral antibiotics, such as erythromycin or clindamycin. Using antibiotics in combination with topical benzoyl peroxide can help reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance developing.

Other Acne Treatments

Over-the-counter medications for acne often help with mild cases of acne. These contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. More severe cases of acne may require retinoic acid, a type of vitamin A, or isotretinoin. However, medications such as these can have serious side-effects, so they should only be used when other, milder treatments are not effective.

Considerations

Taking some precautions can help limit your risk for sports-related acne. These include not wearing headbands or hats for extended periods, wearing a cotton T-shirt under your uniform and showering right after your game or practice is over.
Another condition can sometimes be mistaken for sports-related acne. Some people get allergic contact dermatitis because they are allergic to certain ingredients used to manufacture the equipment.
