Things to Know About Ron Artest Workout Routines

Ron Artest, who goes by the name Metta World Peace, is a well-known basketball player and a rapper. The forward is known for his involvement in a fight that spilled into the stands in 2004, when he played for the Indiana Pacers. Artest is serious about his workouts. The 30-year-old is 260 pounds at 6 feet 7 inches tall. His self-produced rap single "Workout" makes public his love of hard workouts.
Workout Routine
Artest works out four days a week. An Artest workout is long and combines different types of training. He uses weights, but also does cardio -- such as running in the sand -- and agility drills. Artest prefers body weight exercises, such as pushups and chin-ups. He also performs basketball-specific exercises, even in the off-season, though he says he works more on his body than his game. He likes to exercise outdoors, or at least out of a gym. Artest's workouts are high intensity; he pushes himself to his limit and takes days off only to recover.
Body Weight Exercises
Body weight exercises make up the bulk of Artest's strength training. Body weight exercises force your muscles to lift the weight of your body against the force of gravity. Pushups, sit-ups, pull-ups, squats and lunges are well-known body weight exercises; however, anything that requires strength and does not use equipment is a body weight exercise. An inchworm pushup is an example exercise in an Artest workout. To perform an inchworm pushup, start in pushup position. Walk your feet toward your hands as you lift your hips toward the ceiling. Walk your hands forward and return to pushup position. Perform five pushups, then repeat.
Agility Drills
Agility drills are exercises that improve speed, quickness and agility with fast, athletic movements. Some exercises use cones or tools such as medicine balls and speed ladders. An example exercise is the weave in, weave out. This exercise specifically helps basketball players change direction quickly to make them faster on the court. Set four cones, or markers, 3 yards apart in a straight line. Place a cone centered between each of the first line's cones and 3 yards to the left. Sprint to the first cone and then side shuffle to each of the remaining cones.
Nutrition
Nutrition is a large part of an athlete's fitness plan. Artest shops mainly at natural food and supplement stores. He also does a lot of cooking. A typical breakfast for Artest includes an apple, oatmeal and an omelet with soy cheese and spinach. Lunch may include grilled salmon with brown rice and steamed vegetables. He may snack on oranges or a bowl of cooked beans during the day. Dinner may be a simple eight pieces of various sushi.
