Things to Know About Kickboxing in Sacramento

Kickboxing is one of the most effective activities for shedding weight and getting into shape, all the while providing the opportunity to learn a useful stand-up fighting style. Sacramento kickboxing opportunities abound for anyone looking for a demanding workout through cardio-kickboxing classes, and also for those who are more interested in taking their skills to the ring and who are looking for training for amateur and professional fights.
Kickboxing for Sport
Sacramento residents who are interested in the competitive aspect of kickboxing should look into gyms offering Muay Thai (translated as "Thai Boxing" in English) and kickboxing classes with sparring and/or fight teams. Gyms that focus on competition emphasize extremely diligent training regimens, solid and repetitious practice of technique, situational and live sparring, and all-around preparation for stepping into the ring. Muay Thai specifically incorporates the use of elbows and knees in addition to fists and shins to subdue opponents. In Sacramento, several MMA and Muay Thai gyms have programs similar to this.
Cardio-kickboxing
While still utilizing the same basic techniques and principles as a combat kickboxing gym, cardio-kickboxing will focus much less on the competitive aspect of the sport, and instead will aim to specifically increase cardio and build strength, flexibility and endurance. Cardio-kickboxing classes are available in a variety of Sacramento health and fitness clubs as well as through personal trainers. For those of you who are interested in getting in great shape, but prefer to avoid the obligatory punch or kick that is standard in the combat classes, cardio-kickboxing classes are likely a good option.
Gyms
Cardio-kickboxing classes are available throughout the Sacramento region from gyms such as Gold's Gym, California Family Fitness and 1-2-3 Fit. Gyms with a heavier focus on competition kickboxing and Muay Thai in the Sacramento area include Muay Thai Lao Kickboxing Academy, Urijah Faber's Ultimate Fitness, and Sacramento Karate and MMA.
Events and Sanctioning
Kickboxing in the State of California is sanctioned by the International Kickboxing Federation (IKF), which is also the organization with which fighters must register in order to compete at an IKF event. Occasionally, Sacramento will be the site of kickboxing events such as the "IKF Amateur Muay Thai" event scheduled for August 2010. Various gyms, with the sanctioning of the IKF, will sometimes organize fights and competitions. Listings are available through the IKF.
Choosing a Program
The best way to choose what type of kickboxing and gym is right for you is to try out a class. Most gyms will allow you a free trial class. Occasionally, some will charge a drop-in fee. If you already know that sparring and competition are not right for you, then try the cardio-kickboxing classes at gyms in close proximity to your home or work so that it is convenient for you to go. A gym that offers an atmosphere suitable to your goals and that is convenient to reach is ideal.
