Things to Know About Kickboxing in Indiana

Kickboxing is one of the most effective sports for getting into shape and learning a stand-up fighting form. Whether you are interested in a serious Muay Thai (Thai kickboxing) gym to train for fights or simply want a tough exercise routine with cardio-kickboxing classes, Indiana has several options to choose from. Most gyms in Indiana will offer classes in the evenings, making it accessible to the working individual intent on staying in shape.
Muay Thai and Kickboxing for Sport
The type of kickboxing you are interested in doing will help determine the type of gym you are looking for. If you are interested in learning solid technique, an extremely diligent training regimen, sparring and the possibility of getting fights, then look for a gym that offers Muay Thai or kickboxing with a focus on preparing individuals for fights. Muay Thai, in addition to utilizing punches and kicks, will also employ the elbows, knees and clench techniques as ways to subdue the opponent. In Indiana, these gyms are especially common in the Indianapolis area. Some Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gyms in Indiana also offer combat kickboxing, though they may also incorporate a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) focus.
Cardio-Kickboxing
Cardio-kickboxing abounds in Indiana, from gyms and health clubs to personal training studios. Cardio-kickboxing focuses much less on the combat aspect of the sport yet still utilizes the basic techniques in a class setting to provide intense, demanding workouts. Seen as one of the most successful outlets for shedding weight and becoming physically fit, cardio-kickboxing is something you should consider if you want to learn some technique and get in great shape without having to worry about getting hit or kicked.
Gyms
Most Indiana chain gyms will also offer cardio-kickboxing classes such as Gold's Gym and Bally Total Fitness, which can be found throughout the state. Other options include Indy Cardio-kickboxing and Lifetime Fitness, both of which are located in Indianapolis, or Family Fun and Fitness in Greenfield. For Muay Thai and Combat Kickboxing gyms, look to Indianapolis Muay Thai and Indiana Jiu Jitsu Academy, to name a few.
Sanctioning
Amateur and professional kickboxing is legal in the state of Indiana and sanctioned by the International Kickboxing Federation (IKF) rather than the State Commission as is the case for many other states. Events occur occasionally and are commonly organized by local gyms and the IKF.
How to Choose
The best way to decide if you like any particular gym and the style of kickboxing they offer is to try out a class. Most gyms will provide one free class as a trial, without any commitment required on your part. Some gyms, such as Indiana Jiu Jitsu Academy, will offer free one-month trials. Call up gyms in your area to see if this is a possibility. The other aspect would simply be proximity. A gym that is close to work or your home that also offers the atmosphere you like is ideal.
