How to Lose Excess Abdominal Fat?

Your body weight may be within a healthy range, but that doesn’t guarantee a flat belly. Although diet and exercise programs can usually help get rid of potbellies due to excess abdominal fat, sometimes a potbelly will only disappear after cosmetic surgery.
Determine Your BMI
Calculating your body mass index, or BMI, can help you determine if your body weight is within a healthy range. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute provides an online BMI calculator that can help you quickly and easily determine your body mass index. You can also calculate your BMI by multiplying your body weight in pounds by the number 703, and dividing that number by the square of your height in inches. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, your body weight is considered healthy if your BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9. Exceptions can occur in the case of body builders who weigh a lot but have very little body fat.
Excess Abdominal Fat
Excess abdominal fat can cause a potbelly and significantly increase your chronic disease risks, regardless of your body weight. According to Weight-Control Information Network, women with a waist circumference greater than 35 inches and men with a waist measurement greater than 40 inches have more obesity-related health problems due to their body fat distribution. Even if your body weight is within a healthy range, you could have a potbelly if you carry excess body fat in your abdominal region, also referred to as "apple-shaped." The good news is that most likely you’ll be able to reduce the size of your potbelly by following a diet and exercise program created for body fat reduction.
Drastic Weight Loss
If your body weight is within a healthy range and you’ve lost a significant amount of weight recently, you could still have a potbelly. According to MayoClinic.com, when you gain weight your fat cells increase in size and number. If you lose excess body weight and fat, your fat cells will decrease in size but not in number. Therefore, if you’ve experienced a drastic weight loss to achieve your healthy body weight, you may still have excess loose skin or fat cells in your abdomen causing the appearance of a potbelly. this type of condition may not go away with diet and exercise, however, and could require cosmetic surgery to achieve the results you’re looking for.
Diastasis Recti
Diastasis recti is a condition that commonly affects women during and after a pregnancy and can even affect some men. Diastasis recti occurs when abdominal muscles separate vertically down the middle of the abdominal region, causing an outward protrusion of abdominal stomach contents and the appearance of a potbelly. Diastasis recti can cause a potbelly in people of healthy body weights and is generally corrected with cosmetic surgery that allows a surgeon to reattach separated abdominal muscles.
