How to Get Rid of Acne Numbness?

Acne is a painful skin condition that most adults have experienced at one time in their lives. There is no scientific evidence that acne causes numbness, or vice-versa, however. If you are experiencing numbness either in the same place as your acne or on parts of your body where acne does not occur, the problems may be unrelated or they may have a common cause such as an illness or a side-effect to a drug or medication.

Postpartum Effects

Many women experience acne after they give birth to their baby because their hormone levels are fluctuating and returning to normal. The acne usually goes away after your hormones have returned to their pre-pregnancy levels. In addition, women who have had a C-section may experience numbness in the area around the scar. You may experience this numbness if the obstetrician had to cut through a nerve ending to reach your baby. The nerve endings often grow back together over a period of weeks or months, according to Mary Beth Knight and James Rosenthal, authors of "Strategies for the C-Section Mom."

Vasculitis

Vasculitis is a condition in which your blood vessels become inflamed, thickened, weakened or scarred, according to the Mayo Clinic website. There are many kinds of vasculitis, but common symptoms include lesions that look like pimples and numbness. Vasculitis may last weeks, months or even years depending on the kind of vasculitis you have and its severity. The illness is caused when the immune system begins to treat the blood vessels as an invader and attacks them. This condition is treatable with medications, which can lessen the acne-like sores and numbness.

Chemical Toxicity

Exposure to certain types of chemicals, such as pesticides or industrial chemicals, can also cause numbness and acne. For example, exposure to toxic levels of polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, can cause these symptoms as well as headaches, swollen joints and diarrhea, according to Audrey H. Ensminger, author of the "Concise Encyclopedia of Foods and Nutrition." Although accidental exposure to PCBs is rare, you can ingest toxic levels of PCBs through contaminated food or from exposure to the chemical in the workplace.

Methamphetamines

Acne and numbness are also side effects of using certain illegal street drugs, such as methamphetamines or "meth." In addition to acne, meth causes dry and itching skin, according to Christina Stroud, author of "You Are More Than This Will Ever Be." The itching and numbness are a result of the way in which meth affects the nerves. If you seek treatment and discontinue your use of meth, your acne and numbness should improve over time.
