How are Whole Beans Cooked in Halogen Oven?

Tabletop halogen ovens are a compact and efficient cooking appliance. The powerful halogen lamp in the oven's lid generates both heat and infrared radiation, with the latter speeding both cooking and browning. The lid also incorporates a fan to circulate the hot air, in the same way as conventional convection ovens. The net effect is an oven that will roast and bake foods very quickly. They can also be used to steam vegetables, such as whole string beans, either with an optional steamer insert or aluminum foil.

Steamer Insert

Step 1

Pour 1/4 inch of water into the bottom of the halogen oven. Insert the steamer tray.

Step 2

Trim the tips of your beans, and string them if they're an heirloom variety. Cut them into bite-sized lengths or leave them whole, as you prefer.

Step 3

Distribute the beans evenly on the steamer insert. Lock the lid into place, and set the cooking temperature for 350 F and the time for 20 minutes. Press the Start button.

Step 4

Watch your beans through the side of the halogen oven as they cook. They'll typically require 15 to 20 minutes to cook, but you may wish to take them out earlier if they're especially thin and delicate. When they look done, open the oven and check them manually. Take care to avoid the burst of dangerously hot steam.

Step 5

Remove the beans from your halogen oven and serve them immediately.

Foil Method

Step 1

Trim and string your beans, if necessary, and either cut them to bite-sized pieces or leave them whole.

Step 2

Divide the beans into individual portions, and lay each portion on a separate 8- to 10-inch square of aluminum foil, shiny side up. Drizzle a teaspoon of water over each portion, and add a small pat of butter if you wish.

Step 3

Fold the aluminum foil and roll the edges together, crimping them to make an airtight seal. Distribute them evenly around the other foods in your halogen oven.

Step 4

Cook for 20 minutes, until the beans are tender and your other foods have finished cooking. If the remainder of the meal requires more than 20 minutes to cook, add the beans at the appropriate time during cooking.

Step 5

Unwrap the beans and serve hot, with the rest of the meal.
