Hair Loss Effects of Chromium Picolinate Over-intake


Sixty-eight percent of people in the United States are overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Many people are looking for a solution when diet has failed, and chromium picolinate is a supplement often used for weight loss. However, before you try it, keep in mind that it can have many side effects, including hair loss.

Chromium and Picolinate

Chromium is a trace mineral needed in the body used to enhance the action of insulin. Insulin plays a large role in metabolism and storage. The fat, carbohydrate and protein are broken down into glucose, which is moved from the blood into the cells by insulin. Chromium is often paired with picolinate -– a by-product of the amino acid tryptophan -– to increase the body’s absorption of chromium.

Chromium Picolinate Supplements

According to the Office of Dietary Supplements, consumer sales of chromium supplements were about $85 million, or 5.6 percent of all mineral-supplement sales in 2002. Many of the health claims made by chromium picolinate suppliers are not supported by USDA research. In fact, by 2002, these suppliers had been fined 32 times by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission for false product claims, according to the California State University-Long Beach's Health Resource Center. The Office of Dietary Supplements states that further research needs to be done on the safety and effectiveness of the supplements.

Excess Chromium Picolinate

The normal supplemental amount of chromium ranges from 50 to 200 micrograms. According to MedlinePlus, chromium taken in excess amounts could result in iron and zinc deficiencies. Chromium in large amounts makes it difficult for the body to absorb iron, and it decreases zinc absorption. Other effects include kidney problems and liver damage.

Hair Loss

Zinc and iron are essential for hair growth. MayoClinic.com and the Office of Dietary Supplements report that iron and zinc deficiencies can lead to hair loss. MayoClinic.com says that hair loss can be caused by a poor diet, especially one that is low in protein, vitamins, and minerals. People who are taking chromium picolinate should consume a diet that is adequate in all nutrients. According to the Hair Loss Learning Center, some people who experienced hair loss were able to reserve the effects by discontinuing the use of the supplement. To avoid the side effects of weight loss supplements, consume a diet that is low is saturated and trans-fats, high in fiber and whole grains, and includes fruits, vegetables, lean meat and dairy.
