Developing Boxing Sparring Skills

Boxing is a sport that is both strategic and violent at the same time. Boxing requires a lot of planning, strategy and thought, but it is executed through brute force. Preparation for a boxing match is of paramount importance because you must train for the specific fighting style and strengths of your opponent. Sparring plays an important role in every fight preparation.
Description
Sparring in boxing refers to practicing in the ring, with a real opponent, throwing real punches. Your sparring partner is either another boxer from your own club, or someone picked by your trainer who he feels will help advance your training the most. Paying attention to safety is important in sparring because you are never out to injure your partner, but the sparring is supposed to be like a dress rehearsal for the real thing, so you must be willing to take a punch or two.
Types
Sparring generally falls into one of three different categories. Technical sparring is when you spar with the purpose of executing a specific movement or combination. It is more of a learning process. Conditional sparring is when limits are placed on what types of punches and moves may be used before the session begins. As an example, if getting inside the opponent's hook punch is the goal of the session, the condition may be that the fighters can only throw hooks at half speed to let the other work out the kinks. The trainer typically sets down the conditions.
Benefits
Sparring is a part of boxing training that offers many benefits to a fighter. When practicing offensive and defensive moves against an opponent who actually hits back, you will improve your balance, timing, agility, hand-eye coordination and reflexes. It also allows you to train for your fight in the most realistic way, which helps with your nerves when the real fight day comes.
Strategies
Sparring isn't just about getting in the ring and practicing all of your different skills against an opponent. Your trainer will have a strategy in mind during sparring sessions to get you ready for the fight at the right time. Working on the weaker points in your fighting arsenal is one strategy. Your trainer may also have you spar against a handful of different partners who have different styles, so you become proficient against all types of boxers.
