Body Conditioning for Boxing


Boxing is one of the most demanding sports when it comes to physical conditioning. Boxers fight for three-minute rounds, and that usually means nonstop movement at high speed. Boxers have to create opportunities to deliver hard punches, and they have to avoid giving their opponents the chance to throw effective punches. This requires maximum conditioning that can be accomplished with effective workouts.
Significance
Boxers get plenty of support from trainers, sparring partners, friends and family members. However, when they step in the ring they do so all by themselves. In order to survive the experience in good shape and have a chance to win the boxing match, they must have put in their best effort to get in boxing shape or they will lack confidence when they step in the ring. Boxers can't fool themselves. If they know they didn't put enough of a training effort in against a top opponent they won't be able to fight with purpose and abandon. Instead, they will fight out of fear and the result will not be as effective.
Types
Boxers engage in cardiovascular exercise and strength training to get in top condition. Boxers regularly do road work, which consists of running three to five miles early in the morning when they are preparing for a fight. Other top cardiovascular exercises and drills include jumping rope, hitting the speed bag and interval training involving an exercise bike or sprinting. Boxers also do strength training. While traditional strength exercises like the bench press and arm curls can be effective, boxers are more likely to throw punches with 2- to 4-lb. weights in their hands and also punch the heavy bag.
Function
Boxers tend to become much more confident in their all-around ability when they are in shape. Boxers go through a checklist as they prepare for a fight and if they know they are peaking in terms of cardiovascular conditioning, punching power and ability to absorb a hard punch they will feel confident about their chances.
Considerations
Boxers who climb into the ring when they are not in the best of shape are taking a big risk. Boxing is one of the most dangerous and vicious sports, and fighters often put themselves in harm's way and take a punch in order to throw one. When you are not in peak condition, your reaction time is slower and the result can be taking a heavy punch full-on instead of taking a glancing blow.

Boxers base their ability to go into the ring based on the condition they are in. Only boxers who are in the best of shape can step into the ring with full confidence. In a sport that can produce devastating results, boxers owe it to themselves and those that care about them to not fight unless they are in the best of shape. This has always been the case and it will remain that way as long as boxing remains a mainstream sport.
