About Hips Turning in Golf Swing


Golf is a game of precision, and all golfers want to perform at their best, regardless of ability. Rotating with the hips and turning the core is essential for building a golf swing packed with power and efficiency. This leads to longer golf shots and more consistency on the course. Making a tighter turn of the hips requires improved core strength and rotational capability, as well as a better understanding of golf swing fundamentals.
Step 1
Turn your shoulders to begin the golf swing. The shoulders trigger the arms and core and clear out to provide the space to turn your hips, trunk and core.
Step 2
Coil your body on the back swing without sliding outside your base. This is accomplished by shifting your weight to the back side and reaching your arms up to the sky -- all while turning your hips and shoulders away from the target.
Step 3
Place an alignment stick into the ground just outside your left and right feet before making the turning motion. This will give your body feedback when making the turn and constrict the boundaries of your body to prevent a slide.
Step 4
Lead with your hips to start the downswing. Unravel the coil you created on the back swing by shifting your weight forward and driving down towards the golf ball.
Step 5
Move your weight to the front side by turning your hips and shoulders back towards the target. The left hip should turn out and move up to clear out in an ideal golf swing.
Step 6
Allow your hands to match your shoulders by driving the golf club right down onto the back of the golf ball.
Step 7
Release the golf club by allowing your right forearm to cover your left after impact and transferring 90 percent of your weight to your left foot. This will ensure that your core has rotated properly and the transfer is tight and efficient.
