7 Absolute Beginner Tips About Boxing


Among the oldest sports in the world--it was featured in the original Olympic games of ancient Greece--boxing was once referred to as the "gentlemanly art of self-defense." It still holds value today as a method of self-defense. From modern Army hand-to-hand combat training to the arena of mixed-martial arts, boxing is the foundation of the most effective fist-fighting methods. Pugilists can stand and defend themselves in the ring, the cage and even in a back alley dust-up.
Step 1
Wear boxing gloves and hand wraps in all of your training. These safety tools will protect your body from the damages of striking with your relatively fragile closed fists.
Step 2
Practice shadowboxing to learn the basic punches and footwork of boxing. Shadowboxing provides you the opportunity to practice jabs and crosses, hooks and uppercuts, and the footwork of boxing without the risk or fear of getting punched in the mouth by an opponent. It should form the beginning of your boxing training.
Step 3
Hit the heavy bag. Commonly known as a "punching bag," working the bag teaches you to hit properly. Punching the heavy bag replicates the impact of hitting a human body. Work the bag with all of your strikes to learn how to strike properly without breaking your hand or wrist.
Step 4
Imagine that the heavy bag is an actual opponent while working out with it. According to the legendary boxing champion Jack Dempsey, this is a critical element of quality boxing training.
Step 5
Have your training partner feed you focus mitt drills. Work the mitts as targets while avoiding the strikes your opponent throws with the mitts. This teaches you to work tactics such as counterpunching and infighting with hooks and uppercuts.
Step 6
Wear your gloves and mouthpiece, and spar with your opponent. Practice fighting against different types of tactics. Have your partner try to keep you away with jabs, straight punches and footwork one round. Ask him to try and work his way inside so you can protect against hooks and uppercuts the next round. Spar against different training partners so you can learn to read different body types and personalities.
Step 7
Get in the ring and fight. According to Mark Hatmaker, boxing and mixed-martial arts coach, if you don't actually get in the ring and put your skills to the test, you're not a boxer. "Glove up" and box against a real opponent who wants to beat you as much as you want to beat him. Fight in the ring to learn where your weaknesses are as well. Winning or losing can teach you what skills you are lacking. Follow your fight by practicing to overcome these weaknesses.
