5 Ways to Increase Your Boxing Reflexes

Boxing is a sport that requires many skills and attributes to keep you on your feet and off the canvas. One of the primary traits a boxer must possess is superior reflexes. Punches are thrown at fast speeds and from different angles during the course of a bout, and if you don't react accordingly your fights won't last long. Perform specific drills to help improve your reflexes so you are able to compete at a high level.
Step 1
Jump rope as a regular part of your workouts to improve your coordination and agility, which will in turn help your reflexes. Experiment with different footwork and rope spinning techniques to make the exercise more challenging.
Step 2
Hit the speed bag as part of your boxing workouts. Vary the number of times it bounces off the platform and hit it from different angles and with different parts of your hand, so it moves unpredictably.
Step 3
Hit the boxing hand pads with a partner or trainer in the ring. Throw a variety of combinations and have your trainer swing back at you so you have to use your natural reflexes to get out of the way.
Step 4
Spar in the ring with a partner, emphasizing quick jabs and blocks to work on reflexes. Mix up the speed and variety of punches as your reflexes improve.
Step 5
Perform a glove tapping drill with a partner to lose your natural flinch reflex. Hold your gloves up in front of your face in a fighting stance and move around the ring. Have a partner tap your gloves without warning as he follows you around the ring. The goal is to not blink when he taps.
