5 Things to Know About American Kickboxing

1. An All-American Hybrid
Kickboxing is a sport where opponents exchange kicks, punches and throws in a quest for physical domination. American Kickboxing is a hybrid of traditional kickboxing and martial arts. It's widely seen as a stronger, more graceful form of kickboxing, while others view it as a weakened version of Muiy Thai.
2. American Kickboxing Rules
Opponents are allowed to strike each other above the hips using their hands, fists or feet. Opponents cannot use their shins, elbows or knees during the contest. Bouts typically last 2 to 3 minutes with a 1-minute break between. The details must be agreed upon by both opponents prior to the contest, but in general the rules are as follows: a fight is made up of 3 to 12 bouts unless it's stopped by a referee. A knockout, when one opponent goes down for the count, also ends the contest. If the fight continues through all the scheduled rounds, a panel of 3 judges decides the winner.
3. Not Your French Teacher's Academy
There are academies dedicated solely to teaching the art of American Kickboxing. Many fitness facilities also offer American kickboxing classes, though they're more likely to offer cardio kickboxing, which is not the same thing. To locate an authentic American Kickboxing class, look for gyms that teach boxing. It's very likely that they'll train American Kickboxing as well and if they don't, they'll prove to be a valuable resource for you.
4. Kick it up a Notch
Each academy progresses students through levels determined by their governing board. Many use a belt system similar to that of martial arts. Others use numbered levels to indicate that students have mastered a specific set of skills. Regardless of how a student levels up, he must show a consistent understanding of the skills, combined with a quality technique.
5. Go for the Gold
American Kickboxing competitions are held in most major cities, and most academies that teach American Kickboxing will know about upcoming events. Reputable academies don't allow you to compete until you have a good foundation of skills. However, there are some places that let you to walk in off the street and step into a ring. This is strongly discouraged by those who are knowledgeable about American Kickboxing. A background in mixed martial arts as strongly encouraged before you progress to competition. The United States Kickboxing Association sanctions fights when the opponents are evenly matched in skill and weight.
