5 Things a Beginner Must Know About Kickboxing

Kickboxing can be a great cardiovascular workout, but it is also a form of self-defense that can help you get yourself out of a dangerous situation. It is also a sport that allows you to compete in martial arts competitions. Kickboxing is a combination of boxing and karate and was first popularized in Japan and Thailand.
Step 1
Use your fist, forearm, elbow, foot, shin and knee to strike your opponent. The goal in kickboxing is to win the fight by knocking out or decisively beating your opponent. In most kickboxing matches, the most devastating blows are struck by the fists or the elbows. However, the ability to kick effectively may be the difference between opponents. An opponent who can deliver a crescent kick or spinning back kick effectively may stun his opponent and set him up for the knockout blow.
Step 2
Jab your opponent with your left fist (if you are right-handed) to control the pace of the fight. Make sure your left shoulder is facing your opponent. As you get within striking distance of your opponent, shoot your left fist out as quickly as possible to keep your opponent off-balance. Key striking areas are the eyes, nose, mouth and shoulder of your opponent.
Step 3
Throw combination punches to seize control of the fight. The usual combination is a left jab followed by a right cross. However, in kickboxing you can use use your left jab followed by a jumping front kick, a right roundhouse kick or a spinning back kick. The 1-2 aspect of the combination may drop your opponent or leave him vulnerable to another attack.
Step 4
Plan your attack by working to your strength. Do not concern yourself with your opponent's strengths and weaknesses at first. Throw punches in combinations--jabs, hooks, crosses and uppercuts.
Step 5
Defend against all punches and kicks. One of the most important aspects of all martial arts competitions is the ability to defend yourself from your opponent's attacks. Use your forearms and shoulders to fend off heavy punches and kicks. Take evasive action with your feet to avoid taking a punch or a kick.
