5 Basic Boxing Training Tools

Whether you are boxing for fitness, recreation or competition, there are many boxing training tools that can help improve your cardiovascular endurance, punch speed and power, as well as your overall boxing skills.
Boxing Gloves
Boxing gloves are worn in training and during matches to protect the boxer's hands. Boxing gloves come in various styles that are used in different situations. There are light, thinly padded gloves for speed training. There are thickly padded gloves for punching a heavy bag. There are thick gloves designed for sparring that protect both boxers and there are professional gloves that meet professional guidelines.
Heavy Bag
A large, suspended, sand-filled bag is used for punching. A boxer can work on his body shots, footwork and body movement while using this bag. A heavy bag simulates the experience of hitting a solid object. The heavy bag is kept steady from behind by a training partner. On the heavy bag, fighters practice their variety of punches, throwing punches individually, in combination and work to increase their punching endurance. On a heavy bag, the head and body can be targeted.
Speed Bag
A small, hanging, air-filled bag is used for punching. Training on a speed bag involves using both hands to continuously punch the bag, at chin level causing it to move on its chain. The goal once the bag is swaying is to maintain a rhythm of accurately hitting it quickly with one hand after the other. This boxing tool is designed for quick punching to work on a boxer's punching accuracy and timing.
Skipping Rope
A long piece of rope is held with a hand on each end and is jumped over and then swung overhead and continued forward down to be jumped over again. A skipping rope is a common boxing training tool used to train a boxer's cardiovascular system as well as improve footwork, agility and hand-eye coordination. The rope is to be skipped for several minutes to be an affective exercise.
Sparring Partner
A sparring partner helps simulate the experience of a live boxing match. During a sparring session, both boxers wear boxing gloves, headgear and mouthpieces for protection. In a sparring session, boxers are able to practice many of the techniques and tactics they have been taught. It also gets them to feel more comfortable in the ring and the session is used to build a fighter's fighting stamina. Sparring is often done in a boxing ring with timed rounds.
