4 Things to Know Before Choosing Boxing Head Gear

Boxing is a full-contact sport that increases your risk of injury. Head trauma is a risk all boxers take. To protect your head during sparring or an amateur boxing match, it is important to have the right headgear. Headgear in boxing often requires a period of adjustment because of the weight and decrease in peripheral vision. Choose headgear that best matches your fighting style and comfort level.
Step 1
Inspect all headgear for thickness. Boxing headgear is padded to provide protection. Look for headgear that has thicker padding and will cradle your head instead of making your head feel isolated in a shell.
Step 2
Try on the headgear to ensure a proper fit. Headgear that is loose will not protect your head from heavy blows. Ideal headgear will fit snugly and cover your temples, ears, back of the head and forehead.
Step 3
Inspect the outer shell to make sure all stitching is tight and secure. The outer shell of boxing headgear is made of vinyl, so look for small cracks or tears on the exterior and interior of the headgear.
Step 4
Opt for headgear with cheek protections straps. These straps are designed to support your cheeks and jaw while keeping headgear firmly in place. Cheek straps fasten under your chin with a metal or plastic clasp. Make sure cheek straps are securely attached to the headgear. Any torn stitching or looseness can increase the chances of the straps coming off during sparring or a fight.
