4 Things to Know About Boxing

While boxing involves punching an opponent repeatedly, many boxers have more objectives than simply landing a punch. As they compete, they develop both short-and long-term goals that they attempt to achieve over their careers. Even though the brutality of boxing can make the objectives appear straightforward, combatants must consider their goals before every match.
Knockout
You will want to knock your opponent out in any match in which you participate because that's the quickest way to win. You will target the head of your opponent during a match and try to end the match by having him fail to get back to his feet after a knockdown. Only the referee can stop the bout in the case of a knockout. In addition, you can gain a technical knockout victory if you hurt your opponent with a legal blow and he cannot continue the match.
Decision
If you cannot win a match by knockout, you'll want to win by decision. Three judges score each bout using the 10-point must system. This means that they score every round out of a possible 10 points, giving the winner 10 and the loser nine or less. The judges add up the scores at the completion of the match and award the match to the most deserving combatant.
Title
Every boxer want to end up with a title around his waist. Many paths lead to this goal because of the presence of various boxing organizations. This started when the New York State Athletic Commission would not recognize the National Boxing Association. This rift created two separate championship belts for each weight class in the United States. Eventually, international athletic commissions created their own title belts. Today, the World Boxing Association, World Boxing Council, World Boxing Organization and International Boxing Federation govern the upper echelon of the sport.
Spirit of Boxing
Boxing is as much an athletic art as it a traditional fight. A good boxer should have the objective of out-boxing an opponent, while following the rules, rather than winning at all costs. Gaining knowledge of punches and defensive tactics gives boxers the ability to succeed. The objective of improving and competing in a fair manner remains an objective for many boxers.
