3 Ways to Develop Boxing Skills


The sport of boxing is demanding from both a physical and mental perspective. In order to have a chance at competing and surviving, you have to be in the best condition. At the same time, you need to work on boxing skills to have a chance at winning. Improving your quickness, punching power and instincts are some of the goals when training for a fight.
Speed Bag
This is one of the top tools in boxing for learning punching accuracy. Hitting a speed bag is about building a rhythm and hand-eye coordination. In order to get the most out of the speed bag, use your left jab in a circular motion to build your rhythm. As you hit the bag it will bound off the circular support and then come back at you. Pound the bag each time it bounds back at you in order to get your hand-eye coordination where it needs to be in order to compete against a first-rate fighter.
Road Work
In order to build endurance that will help you hold your form when you have a boxing match, you have to do road work. Boxers run 3 to 5 miles three or four times per week as they prepare for a fight. This is usually done early in the morning and precedes a training session. Boxing can be an exhausting experience because you are moving and punching for 3 minutes at a time. You are trying to deliver punches and avoid your opponent's blows. The more you run to build your endurance, the better your chances of holding your form in the late stages of the fight.
Sparring
The best way to prepare for a fight is to get into a ring and spar with a live opponent. When you are sparring you will wear bigger gloves and protective headgear. Despite the protective nature of both pieces of equipment, you are vulnerable to getting hit hard and you can get hurt. As a result, you have to fight as if you were in a boxing match. There is no holding back. You learn what it feels like to hit and get hit and that will help you keep your wits about you when fighting in a real bout later on.
